I currently use Libre Office for text documents, but have taken on a new job that will not accept .odt files. I must send .doc files (I work from home as a freelance writer).

For small jobs I've just converted .odt files to .doc, but the last assignment of 30 documents took a hell of a time as I had to change all the formatting, headers etc. and it added hours to the work-time (I get paid by number of words, not hours worked).

Therefore, I'm looking to buy MS Office word. I don't need excel, powerpoint etc. Is it possible just to buy MS Word, if so how? Where? Or is there an alternative suggestion?

Thanks for any help.

You can buy Word on its own, but the latest version will cost £110 direct from Microsoft - I'm sure you could find it cheaper elsewhere.

A one-year subscription to Office 365 Home would be a lot cheaper, although obviously would expire in a year. However it's probably not licensed for business use.

It's strange that they want .doc format, given it was superseded by Microsoft's .docx format in Word 2007, which would be 8 years ago.

Is the job a long-term one, or would a 60-day trial version of MS Office be long enough?

why not just save the document in open office as a .doc instead of a .docx?

I got the full package off eBay fairly cheaply.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Yes, that's the best thing to do. You can even make this the default. The details may vary depending on what version you are using but in Word 2010, if you go to File / Options / Save and then set "Save files in this format" to be "Word 97-2003 document (*.DOC)" and click OK then .doc becomes the default.
  • I'm using Libre Office writer and I can't see an option to save file as a .doc It's saving as a .odt file. Sorry for the error in the first post. I blame stress! And too long searching online for an answer.

File > Save As > then under the File name there is a Save as type box and simply choose Microsoft Word 2007 for .docx or Microsoft Word 97 for .doc from the drop down menu.

You can also set up .DOCX (preferably) or .DOC as the default Save option in LibreOffice with a bit of hunting.

I don't have LibreOffice on this laptop to point you in the right (Write?!) direction, but I'm sure someone else has...

I'd buy office 365. you can buy it from Amazon for £63 for a year. You can always revert to Libre Office after a year if it doesn't suit.

In Libre Office just choose file, save as (plenty of file formats available)

You can make Libre Office automatically default to MS office formats by opening up a Libre Office document and then choosing Tools, options, load/save, general, default file format, choose default, Ok. You are then set up for all future documents.

While there you can use the same default file format dialogue box to set defaults for spreadsheets and presentations also.
