Asbestos removal.

It shouldnt cost £300 to take one sample from the door and test it. £100 maybe, but not £300. You could easily get a whole house surveyed for £300.
Also if you can remove the door from the frame keeping the hinges on the door then I'm not sure it would be notifiable. Best to email the HSE for confirmation.
A sample analysis would tell you if it was asbestos cement which is not notifiable, or asbestos insulating board, which is due to it's higher likelihood of releasing fibres when disturbed.0 -
Check with your Local Authority waste reception site first. Our LA used to have an area for ACM's but since they outsourced to a private company they no longer seem to provide the facility. If your LA does then they will normally tell you how you can transport it but as a rule it is going to be boards that are double-bagged and taped. I suspect that this may be another one of those services that LA's are charging for or if they don't now will do (money is tight in Local Government). Use heavy duty rubble bags, you don't want one splitting on the way.
If you take it off and leave it in the garage/shed/loft you are just storing a problem that you will still have to deal with in the future, and who knows, if the regulations change you may find it more difficult and/or more expensive to dispose of in the future. There is also the problem that if you store it can you be certain that it won't get damaged in any way, Generally boards only become an issue when they get damaged and start to release fibres.
If the LA doesn't have the facility to dispose then you may be better off just getting rid now as costs for removal/disposal aren't going to come down with time.
A quick Google found self test kits http://www.pennington.org.uk/product/asbestos-testing-kit/ I've never used one myself so can't vouch but if you knew what type of asbestos you were dealing with then you could call around a few companies to get prices for removal/transport/disposal.0 -
That is not an asbestos test kit it is an asbestos sampling kit. The sample will still need to be submitted to a lab for analysis.0

About half way down the page it states that the pack includes return postage to the lab, test results from UKAS lab and that the lab analysis fee is included. As I said I've not used this type of service so don't know how good it is; it was just the first one I clicked on from a Google search. I'm sure there will be others.0 -
It seems expensive. You could buy that stuff yourself cheaper and get a lab to analyse it for £10-£14
I recommend these masks: http://www.protectivemasksdirect.co.uk/alpha-3030v-ffp3-masks-pack-5-ffp3-masks-877-p.asp0 -
