Would like some advice

Hi,
hopefully some of you are aware of me and my posting history.
Basically, i'm in my late 20's. I've never known what I wanted to do with my life. Never will. Am not very intelligent. Only have average GCSE's.

I've been working minimum wage jobs, on-and-off, for most of my adult life. Usually loading lorries, or packing boxes etc.
I have some gaps on my CV where i've been unable to find work for long(ish) periods of time which, I imagine, puts employers off.

I also have some social anxiety which makes job interviews impossible. I literally forget my own name and can't think on my feet and think of answers to the questions.

Anyway, recently, the manager of a football team I play for has put a good word in for me with his partner, and it's looking fairly likely that I could have a job as a 'window fitters mate'. The pay would apparently be a big step up to what i'm used too.

I'm told It would also likely mean no job interview which is a huge bonus for me, as I'd just then ruin any chance I had of getting it.

My main concern at the moment is as to whether i'd be able to actually do it.
Has anyone done this as a job? How technical is it?
What exactly would it involve???

I'm a believer in 'right brained V Left brained' people.

I'm the sort of person who can't hang up a picture or a shelf. Completely clueless with DIY.....COMPLETELY!
My mind just doesn't seem to be wired correctly with certain things. Someone could ask me to open the window in a train, and i'm there for ages trying to find a level or work out what part to push etc! I tried to build a home gym once, and the results were comical! I called one of my friends over who'd never built one before either, and he breezed through it in about 20 minutes!
I once helped a friend move house, and apparently I was carrying things wrong and making life much harder for myself without realising!
Everyone else was carring the wooden beams down the stairs on their shoulders, whereas I was carrying it infront of my with my arms kind of straight, expending a lot of energy and effort than them.

But I can draw, and play sport and play musical instruments. (piano, guitar, ukulele, drums)

I've got lots of concerns, but at the same time, I imagine i'd regret turning it down since it could give me a shot at a better life.
I currently make about 13K per year working about 40hrs.
Most of my friends earn around 50K, and some of them earn over 100k. (They pretty much all went to uni and are far more intelligent that I!)

Thoughts?

Based on what you say, I think a window fitters mate is the wrong job for you, sorry.

You've some great hobbies. Can these be chased along more? And don't compare yourself to others. It really doesn't help. You are you and have creative talents in art and music that others may never have. Talk to an adult college and see how these can be strengthened and where opportunities lay. Good luck.

Ever thought of trying to earn extra money by being a George Formby tribute act?

You need to be thinking left field, find a job to fit your talents.

So do you all think i'd be unable to do this job based on my OP?

    Anyone have any opposing thoughts?

    regards.

I wouldn't say that you you'd be unable to do the job but, from what you've said, it doesn't sound like an ideal match.

I think the main problem could be in the longer term when most people would expect to move up from being a window fitter's mate to being the actual fitter. The mate's probably more of a gopher and a second pair of hands.

I certainly wouldn't give up a secure, full time job for it unless you could take some annual leave and have a week's trial run.

Why not have a chat with the window fitter about it - they won't want someone who isn't right for the job any more than you want the wrong job. Perhaps you could shadow the job one Saturday?

My first thoughts were, hasn't pinpin started quite a few similar threads about being depressed with work, and asking for advice as to what he should do ?

  • Beware - common sense and a lot more is needed in jobs paying upward of 15k.

I've always thought you needed confidence building and it came from that time you intimated I just didn't know if or where my strengths lay when you couldn't have been furthest out I'm afraid, though it turns out my problem was er, common sense if truth were known, but shall like to [STRIKE]think[/STRIKE] argue I possessed the confidence to say something wasn't right so thank the lord and have learnt not to go there again, so by saying what you admit in your first post shouldn't get you far or do any justice sounding so unsure. I might be useless with words but once you start saying things like I can't do this, you start proving yourself right and you open yourself up wide. I could be out on my ear if I start harboring thoughts aloud of I'll never do this let alone while being considered. :o

I agree you need to offer yourself for a day to see if this is your bag, before you'll have the very opposite problem of end up labelled a job hopper, forget gaps for a job you can prove you can do. Being employed on sympathy isn't the greatest so least find out where your strengths are so to avoid this (where possible) and constantly ending in the same 'ole hole.

I generally find there is always something new to replace what you were just worrying about so that helps as well.

I think you are more capable than you give yourself credit for....Learning to play musical instruments isn't for dummies.... What about playing in pubs as a starter? Get your friends to come and support you, your confidence will build. Speak to your local college if they have a music tutor, they maybe able to help.

    Thanks for the replies.

Consensus seems to be that i'd be out of my depth.

I'll likely stick with packing boxes then, although still need to speak to my dad and see what he thinks.

    Kind Regards.
