Hey

Im in desperate need of some advice. I'm looking to move house and getting a mortgage with my husband we have spoken to a few companys and can get one but the deposit is 35% upwards its ridiculous! We were advised to check our credit files my husbands is good and I've noticed mine has a default on it. In 2006 I had a store card with river island (Santander) and paid off the account in 2009 for some reason its showing 2 on my account one that I opened in 2007 (which I never had) why would they give anyone 2 cards for the same company? The account that was open in 2006 is showing a U all the way through its history so (unidentified) until it was settled in 2009 the other account has payments on it some missing and then there was a default placed on the account in 2011! I've tried ringing Santander but they no longer have the store card accounts they sold the accounts onto new day limited I've spoken to them they have no clue who iam nothing is on their records. Ive also spoken to River island and they have nothing either. What do I do? HELP xx

    Hi Kellym8083, welcome to MSE.

Does your credit file show different account number(s) for each entry - that may help you get to the bottom of things. If it doesn't then I would suggest you either email or write to the relevant company that has recorded the information on your file (either Santander or River Island) and asking them to verify all accounts that you had with them. (It is better to keep things in writing).

Make it clear that you believe they have recorded incorrect data by adding a second account and that this is having an adverse affect on your file. Ask them for proof of the 2 accounts or to remove the incorrect information. If they refuse to cooperate you could escalate the complaint to the FOS. Hope you get it sorted.
