Opening a joint account - distant partners

Guys

I hope someone can advise as I am getting nowhere fast!

I need to open a new joint bank account, and the other account owner is miles and miles away.

My local branch tells me that both of us must go to the same branch to open the account.

I have suggested that the other account holder is miles away and can they not attend a local to them branch of the same bank, but apparently not.

This is an RBS account I am trying to open.

How am I best to proceed?

Is this standard practice, or should I look elsewhere, and if so, where?

Thanks in advance

David

I can understand why they need to be careful these days, but with so many online accounts I *assumed* that there may be some that are more flexible than others.

Even if we had an existing account, so that one of us were "known" already to the bank, they may have been able to do it that way.

    I think this depends.
All joint accounts I ever had, except, possibly, the first one, were opened online (Barclays, Nationwide, Santander, Smile, FD). However, I don't think that this is the case for everyone with joint accounts in these banks.

I've converted a Lloyds account in my name, to a joint account with my wife. I/we did it online, but we both had existing online access to Lloyds and unlike the OP, we live together.

I also persuaded Santander to add my wife to my 123 account. I rang, they wanted us to go to a branch, but they reluctantly agreed to send some forms out.

You have probably been able to do this as CRA information may have linked her to your address etc but a stranger miles away will never get past the online process.
