What is the most you have spent on a plumbing problem?

I have recently spent £319 on a boiler problem (replace diverter valve). My home insurance has emergency cover, which covers accidental damage meaning I was not covered. What is the most that you have spent on a plumbing problem out of your own pocket?

Does anyone have boiler insurance that covers maintenance? Maybe I can avoid these unexpected costs in the future by having insurance?

Most a couple of times £100 for a part like a new pump or valves .Thats like over a 50 year period .
Least a couple of coppers for washers etc .

Each plumber I contacted originally quoted this amount. However, when I told them my boiler was a Potterton Powermax 85 CE they changed the part cost to £140-£170. I went with the best part price i.e. £140.

The plumber confirmed that this was the part they bought.

Therefore I do not believe that I was ripped off as you imply.

My mains water pipe split and it cost me £1500 for a new one to be laid. It didn't help that my actual meter was miles away at the end of my long drive. My home insurance wouldn't cover it.

If the manufacturer had fitted an off the shelf standard diverter valve then maybe but when they use a custom made valve that has linear action rather than rotary then they hold all the cards.
