There's not much benefit to either with a 1/2.3in sensor though as the depth of field is huge on any setting, there's only a few aperture positions and the narrow dynamic range and high noise means there's not really any latitude to extract more from the raw file.

Thanks everyone
I'm even more confused now ...
I shall make a shortlist and watch for the sales.
I did like the option of a viewfinder, also.
Speaking of independent camera stores - I'm not even sure if there's one near me! I shall have to Google and find out.
I'm not a fan of Currys, but will probably go and have a play around if they have some that are on my shortlist.0 -
That's good it's about time they went back to providing them.
The difficulty was optical viewfinders on compacts didn't work with the longer zoom ranges (and weren't particularly accurate even on small zoom cameras) and EVF technology wasn't that compact and also generally fairly rubbish hence viewfinders disappearing. However EVF technology has improved hugely over the last few years (largely driven by the mirrorless market) to the degree high quality and compact EVFs can be implemented more widely.

I like the reviews on http://www.photographyblog.com/ for some help with choosing a camera. I narrowed down a shortlist then looked on that site for reviews before eventually buying the Nikon Coolpix S7000 (which I've not used enough yet to say whether I'd recommend it or not though!).0
