Very Weird Computer Problems!

Options
Sorry for the kind of repost but the situation has changed quite some bit.

I have an old computer - it hasn't worked in quite a while as the old motherboard exploded! (Well, 1 capacitor did). Once I replaced the dead motherboard (and processor) with one I had lying around it still didn't work, so it got left in a corner gathering dust. Today I decided that it was time to try again so I got everything out and with the help of some MSE members, made the computer turn on - so far so good.

When trying to install windows XP it reads from and boots from the CD fine, until it gets to 'To set up windows XP now press enter (or press R for recovery or F3 to quit)' or something along those lines. At this point the computer effectively turns off - all the fans stop spinning and the screen goes blank however a two tone continuous siren starts.

I've tried swapping the hard drive, and even trying without, both times the same thing happens.

I've also booted from a ubuntu linux live CD. This worked fine, and I enjoyed a game of snake to see if in time the same thing would happen - it didn't.

So, now im out of ideas. What would the windows installer be doing that a linux live CD isnt.

Oh yeah, I've also been though my bios having a look for a cpu temp alarm - no mentions.

All ideas and suggestions are welcome!

Everyone needs a volume control -
When you shout every day and make everthing a catastrophe,
no one will hear you when you need to say something really important.
