Home insurance claim before renewal date

Hi
I am hoping someone can help me as I'm not sure what I need to do/not do.
I have contents and buildings insurance with esure (standard buildings cover and standard plus accidental damage for contents).
My renewal date is 20/12/2015. The quote they gave was fine after shopping around, so I phoned on the 4th to renew, paying in full at that time for cover to renew on the 20th. I've had all the documents though since then.
When I phoned to renew, I told them that I was currently waiting for Severn Trent water to come out and investigate a high water bill, as I had recently had a meter fitted and the first bill had come in very high. They made a note of the information, but it didn't affect my premium.
So fast forward to today, Severn Trent come out and they say there is a 'medium speed' leak in my supply, somewhere between the meter and the house. They are sending someone to dig up the pavement on Monday to see if the leak is anywhere in the couple-of-feet distance between the meter and my boundary, but if it turns out that the leak is beyond my boundary it's up to me to sort it.
I have no idea if my insurance would cover me for digging up my drive to find the leak and mend it, but my main question is, if I have to phone them on Monday to ask the question, could they then cancel my next year's renewal or ask for more money - seeing as we haven't reached the renewal date yet? Neither my policy book or Google have been able to help.
Thanks for any help you can offer

If you make a claim, your renewal premium for next year may be affected (and just enquiring can also affect it) - this can happen even if the renewal date has passed as they will ask for the additional premium due.
It's possible home insurance will cover it, although it usually only covers accidental damage (so if the pipe has just failed it wouldn't be covered). Do you have any cover like homeserve which might includes mains water pipe cover?0 -
Any claim/loss you have will affect next year's premium, and the quote you have now only will be honoured if nothing has changed since the quote was produced.
(Try and find out whether or not you are covered from your policy before resorting to ringing to ask - once you contact them the loss will go on your record whether or not you make a successful claim) - next time you suspect a claim, don't inform them till you are certain you can make a successful claim!0 -

I've got home emergency cover as part of my esure policy if that helps?
I've already paid for next year's cover (which starts 20/12/15) and received the documents.0 -
