Plumber charges

Hi all,

Last Wednesday I called a plumber down to look at my boiler.

He said it needed a new expansion vessel. He rang she ordered, said it would be ordered that day, delivered the following day and fitted on Friday (with a call on Thursday to confirm). In the mean time he did a temp fix which I paid for.

I've heard nothing until a text last night (a week on) saying the part has arrived when do I want fitting.

I've signed no contracts apart from a verbal conversation.

They did not do what they did they would do within the timeframe agreed.

The plumber is insisting I cover all restocking fees etc..

Can he make me pay?

It was most probably out of their hands in regards to delayed delivery, you need your boiler fixing, they have the part and are asking for a convenient time for yourself to fit the part...Being awkward now for a sake of a few days will inconvenience you in the near future as the temp fix won't hold forever and you could find yourself going through all the hassle again.

I dont understand this. You engaged this person to diagnose and carry out a repair. This they have done with the proviso that parts are required. These parts have now arrived and the job can progress.

Why do you not want to go ahead with it? Surely the work needs doing?

Are we now at a stage where someone has to sign a multipage contract every time they engage someone? I guess we are and thats what i would do if i were a plumber.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I don't get you issue OP. You've agreed that your plumber order and replace a part, and were given an estimate of when he'd be back dependent on when he received the part. The fact that he said he would call to confirm clearly shows that date wasn't exactly fixed in stone.

So it's a week later than you expected, big deal, the temp fix is still holding is it not!

    Thanks for the responses.

    Two parts

The fix has been perfect. Just before the issue I signed up to boiler cover but there is a period of time before you can claim.

I called the plumber while I was in the period I couldn't claim. They commited to the Friday. If I knew it would be over 10 days I would of just gone with my cover.

The fix they have done is perfect, no issues at all, to me it might not even need a new part.

As they did not stick to the agreed times could they persue me for any bill?

It wasn't an estimate, the plumber was very specific.
The warehouse has the part in stock, we will receive it tomorrow and fit Friday. I will call you Thursday to confirm the time.

I would totally understand if he had said words such as should be, hopefully, earliest etc etc

It was so specific my wife organised that day as a day off to be in.

It'll teach you a lesson if it fails on Christmas Eve and no one can/will come out until the new year.

But then you'll probably commit fraud and claim for a pre existing fault on your insurance.

Karma may get you in the end.

Most Insurance companies will not repair a boiler that has had a temp fix repair.
