I went to a comp that had ideas above itself. Split students into 3 streams and ran itself as a grammar, secondary modern and special school under one roof. The grammar and special needs kids did very well, I think the ones in the middle didn't get as much attention.
It was a super large school in its day (over 2000 pupils), so managed to secure a lot of funding. I left in 1982 so may have changed since.
Mine was the same three streams when I left in 1981. I guess I did ok as I was in the top stream, each stream in each year had four classes of around 30/35 pupils. Think the roll call for the whole school was around 1500. It was one of the reasons I made sure my girls went to a smaller school and were a name and not a number. 0 -

I went to an all-girls grammar school and a mixed comprehensive and all without switching schools or changing the stream I was in.
It was the mid-sixties and I did three years as a pupil at an all-girls grammar, then the LA followed the new government policy and merged a) the boys and girls grammar which until then had been separate and b) the local secondary modern, and thus became one large comprehensive split over various sites.
It felt chaotic to begin with and it probably was. Suddenly there were boys in the class and lots of new children and teachers from other schools, everything got a bit busy all of a sudden.
