I am a .net developer. I want to be able to sit on the sofa in the lounge and do some work on my pc which is physically located upstairs. I am in the process of upgrading this pc for gaming as per this question: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5369256. I believe I have two options:

1) buy a laptop. Then RDP (remote desktop) from my laptop to my pc.
2) stream the pc video to the tv wirelessly and buy a wireless keyboard and mouse. I believe this would do the trick for streaming: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/252205070620?_mwBanner=1

Does anyone else do option 2? Can another developer tell me what laptop they have recently bought?

You can use pretty much any remote access software to achieve it. You can even use your mobile or tablet if you don't want to buy a laptop

You can use Teamviewer, Splashtop, Logmein, realVNC..... the list is quite large.

    3) do the work on the laptop, {and optionally store the data files on the desktop] would a better solution

    remote control has a lag

Thanks, however I would need to buy a top of the range laptop if I chose this option because all software would be installed locally and all processing would be done remotely.

I have a work laptop, which i use to rdp to my desktop at work over vpn. I never notice a lag. As this is a work laptop I cannot use it to rdp to my personal desktop at home.

As a gamer you'll know about the Steam Link

Apart from streaming games to your TV, you can also mirror your desktop.
    Its £40 at Game.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

RDP is your best bet .

What is stopping you using your work laptop ?
