Creative Zen Extra won't talk to computer

Hi
I have just started using my Creative Zen Extra Mp3 player after some months of it gathering dust. However I can't seem to get it to talk to my laptop any more and can't copy new music across. When I plug the unit via the USB port, the Mp3 fires up and the computer makes the sound that it has detected a device. After that - nothing! No narrative or anything. I have tried all the different USB ports on my computer and get the same. I have used a different cable. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled the software but nothing. Nothing has changed on the laptop. My Mcafee is the same as it has always been except the regular updates, as is the XP operating system.
Has anyone got any ideas?
