We have a bog standard CRT monitor and recently the screen's been wobbling and a buzzing noise coming out of it.. is it time for a new monitor? We've checked the connections and everything is fine and we've never had this problem before.. pc is a dell and 2 1/2 yrs old.

Hi IA.
I've had one of those problems on a monitor before. That was a capacitor breaking down, which caused a wobbly picture. Alternately I've also had the transformer in a PSU go bad which caused a nasty buzzing, so the transformer in your monitor might be on the way out.
Considering how cheap 2nd hand CRT's are now, if it goes pop permanently then it won't cost much to replace.
But I also have had a monitor behave very strangely when it's accidentally been set to a refresh rate that it couldn't handle too well. That made a very odd noise, so it might be worth checking that this hasn't got accidentally changed.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

It sounds like the monitor on it's way out, make sure you have no transformer bricks near it, as they can cause interference and wobbliness, but don't normally cause a buzz.
Also, check to see if it does it in safe mode, F8 at boot.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Also it might be worth mentioning that the longer its on the worse it gets... first thing in the morning it's fine but by lunchtime it's normally doing it every 10-20 seconds...... :undecidedTotal 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

Both the problems I mentioned earlier got much worse as the monitor/PC heated up when it had been on for a while. So that seems to be par for the course.
I would start looking around in the various free-ads etc to see how much you can pick second hand CRT up for. People are virtually giving them away now with TFT's taking over.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Funnily enough we were considering upgrading to an tft anyway.. just weren't expecting it to be sooner rather than later!Total 'Failed Business' Debt £29,043

Most CRT last a bit longer than 2 1/2 years but if you get a random bad/faulty component it can go screwy at any time.
Even new TFT's are getting very cheap now if you shop around.:DFree/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
