Windows update stuck

Was on my laptop yesterday, shut it down and got the usual windows update - "Updates are being applied, do not switch off your PC". (Windows 7, by the way). So it chugged away, "Installing update 1 of 13, 2 of 13", etc. It got to 9 of 13 and stayed there for ages. Went and made my tea, came back an hour later, it was still saying it was doing 9 of 13.
I left it another hour, then switched the laptop off (had to hold the power button down to force it to switch off).
Switched it back on, got the usual "Windows was not shut down properly" as expected, selected "restart normally", and everything seemed to be OK. When I shut it down, it carried on trying to install update 9 of 13. I left it all night, it was still stuck there this morning, so I forced it to switch off again.
So, every time I switch it on it seems to work OK ( bar the "was not shut down properly" message ), but it's adamant that it wants to install the rest of the updates. Help ???!!!

Do a system restore to a time before you installed the updates, then when all running OK, search for updates and install them one at a time until you find the culprit OR note down all the KB numbers and search for issues with KB.......0

Thanks Le_Kirk, I'll give that a go when I get home this evening.0

Windows Update is a nightmare these days. My Win 7 laptop played up today when I checked for updates ... it just kept checking and checking for hours.
I did a bit of googling and came up with this tip which has worked for me and might for you. I appreciate it not exactly the same problem you have but this does seem to be a cure for many update issues.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode ... this can usually be achieved by tapping the F8 key during boot up and selecting Safe Mode from the menu that appears.
Once in Safe Mode, go into Windows Explorer, right click on the C: drive and select Properties and then select Disk Cleanup. Make sure you select the boxes relating to Windows Update and run it. Then reboot in normal mode.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -
My Dad's laptop is funny with updates. Just yesterday it got stuck on shutting down. Typically when in a rush. So held power button down and it switched off and back on fine phew.0

Weird, I did the desktop updates yesterday (after I had hidden KB3112343 - again!) and it worked fine. Went to the laptop and after an hour of "searching for updates" I shut it down and went for me tea!
It's a common problem as googling revealed, but the Disk Cleanup did the trick for me. See #4... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -
Go into safemode and uninstall the last update.
Window updates are a right mess these days. You should use a program like WSUSOffline update instead to avoid blacklisted updates.0
