Several banks will give her a starter account, there are links on the MSE main site. You have to go into the branch to open them I don't think any let you open an account online, you won't get an overdraft and I don't think they will issue a check book, but it gets her an account open in her name and a foot on the ladder.

As you say give it 6 months, by then she should be showing on the electoral register, then maybe get a sim only phone contract for a tenner a month, that will start the credit history. A little later she should be accepted for a sub-prime card like Aqua or Barclaycard initial.

It is frustrating but time should make a big difference. Good luck :)

Nothing came up. As stated before her history is blank. We did move to a different address, which combined with the 6 month delay in the council updating the electoral register might have caused the lender some worry as she was registered on the electoral register of the council we lived on. But this was already there for a few months by the time she applied and she hasn't applied to nothing else, so...???

Sorry, I was replying to someone else there, not yourself.
  • You partner should be able to get at least a basic bank account from Barclays, from experience I know that they are good with EU citizens.

As for Aqua, my friend had the same issue as did I. Accepted initially, then the PIN comes, then a decline letter. I was then targeted by Aqua to open an account. Applied again and was accepted no problems so not sure what goes on in their credit control department.

What I will say is, make sure she checks her credit reference agency reports regularly as Aqua were reporting that I had an open credit card account with then when I didn't - but I suppose from her point of view it sounds like any reporting would be useful!

    Good luck.

has anything negative recently been added to either of your credit files?
if not, the 'couple' thing is the reason.

why can't she have her own current acc?

I dont share that experience. Myself I had to pay to a referral agency, years ago, among other things, to open a basic bank account with them. And that was after being employed for a while.

Granted my partner could have done the same, we never got around doing it for whatever reason. We now have a joint account, so in future it will be easier for her to open an account in her own name.

She signed for noodle. They say they dont have enough information to compile a credit file. In the meanwhile experian say they dont have enough information to identify her so they asked for some original documents to be sent over the post.

PS: She managed to get a £2 report from Equifax. Nothing wrong with her credit file.

Bank account for 2 months, registered on the electoral since 2013 and a few insurance quote searches for the car insurance. Aqua card check doesn't appear on file. Go figure...!

I believe Virgin Money, Co-Op and Barclays will accept anyone now but you have to open the account in the branch and have the ID. They often don't advertise the accounts, you get offered them after a decline. They don't offer any chance of going overdrawn or obtaining credit so are open to anyone who couldn't get an account under normal circumstances.

Barclays I believe do this as its a bit of a legacy thing from when they bought the Woolwich, at the time Woolwich were one of the only banks who would give an account to someone who was currently bankrupt.
