Monitor keeps suddenly going black - HELP!

Twice today my monitor has suddenly gone blank. It's like when it goes into sleep mode except I was in the middle of using it both times.
I've checked all the connections and they're all fine. The only way to 'fix' it is to turn the PC off by holding down the on/off button then turning it on again.
When it goes blank there's still power to everything (mouse, keyboard, monitor) but things like the CapsLock light won't come on.
I'm not very literate when it comes to the insides of the computer so please speak in simple terms to me
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Look at replacing the CMOS battery on the motherboard - there's online guides all over the place.
or
Take it outside, take the cover off, and use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out of all the heatsinks, grilles, etc. in case it's overheating that's causing it.0 -
What's the exact make and model of PC please ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0

Have you updated your graphic drivers? Also, are you using a graphics card/Intel graphics?
Could be time for a clean/replacement.0 -

If the caps lock and num lock lights dont work its crashed, video driver issues or a dodgy PSU. Seen similar issues when the PSU is giving up the ghost.
It still powers stuff but the voltage wont be stable, maybe spike or dropping randomly.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I have no idea  How do I update the graphics drivers?
How do I find out if I'm using a graphics card/Intel graphics?

No offence but that's as much use as telling me it's a Ford, need the model number which will be on a sticker at the back. This will tell me a lot about your hardware
I want to make sure you don't have an Nvidia integrated graphics processor.
As others have said, your system is hard locking but with GPU output failure (bothersome) and there are steps to follow:
1) is it clean internally and are all fans working ?
2 ) Power supply faulty
3 ) HW driver issues or other software issue.
4 ) Possible IGP/video card failing.

Might be simpler to start by swapping out the monitor first to see if it's hardware failure imminent. OP will find that easier to eliminate first than taking the case off, which it doesn't sound as if they're confident enough to do.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

From the OPs descriptor it looks unlikely, note the caps lock light not operating which would indicate a pc hardware lockup and not the monitor.
Hopefully it's just an overheating discrete GPU card (current hardware unknown, awaiting OP response) or CPU that's caked in dust.
