How to find out if item is lost or just hasn't got a signature?

I've had no end of bad luck with Royal Mail recently. In the last two weeks Royal Mail has failed to get a signature for ten of my items I am assuming they simply failed to get a signature and show that the item is delivered but is there a way, other than asking the buyer, to find out if the item is lost?

In case the items are lost I want a chance to get ahead of the buyer in chasing up the lost items, but I don't want to have to ask them in the unlikely scenario that they use it to open an item not received case knowing I have no proof of delivery.

Thanks,
Rachael

If they are lost the buyer will tell you soon enough.

Oh, no don't worry I know not to "tempt" the buyer like that. I was just wondering if there was a way to find out without asking the buyer. So I'd have a chance to send out a new item/ chase up an missing item before the buyer knew.

Why? The item may have just got delayed and so they may end up with two. As others have said, wait till they say the item is lost before worrying too much. If you are that worried why not use My Hermes. You can track the item and see if it has been delivered or not. Their tracking sometimes takes a few days to update but gets there in the end.
