But I would defer if I were you. My friend did about 7 years ago (she had 3 little 'uns under 11, and couldn't drive, and 2 kiddies were not at school yet!) Can they not check these things?!

Oh what a blasted nuisance this is! Obviously whoever is picking people, is someone who has no responsibilities (like kiddies/school run/looking after house and home,) and they can drive!
.
That makes no sense whatsoever  It's an entirely random process. Which tbh is the only fair and just way of choosing people.0 -
Why are you all getting in such a lather !
Let them know how hard it is, see what they say .

I'm surprised so many people have deferred and not been called again. When I deferred, the form required me to give alternative dates that would be suitable and I was allocated one of those instead.Mortgage when started: £330,995

I doubt whether the other parent would be compensated for loss of wages.
I was let off jury service completely, when I wrote telling them that I taught mainly exam classes, reminded them of the shortage of specialists and that students would be disadvantaged.
Since I've retired I wouldn't mind doing it, but haven't be called.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

I wouldn't defer, just ask to be excused due to your travel difficulties.0

There appears to be very little information on the net with regard to what constitutes a reasonable travelling distance for jury service. I didn't realise that you were just picked out at random to go anywhere. Surely it would make more sense to make sure people live close to the Court (or does this make it unfair as it won't represent a fair geographical blah blah)?
I've never been called (I'm 34). Can't decide if I want to be or not. Do I still get paid or do I have to take annual leave?Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

I'm 32 and been called for jury service once.
The court was about 14 miles away and I went by train.
Was over 10 years ago now but from what I remember I kept the tickets and they reimbursed me for the cost.
I also had to fill out a form saying how much I earned a day and Im sure they reimbursed me for that too (I think there's a maximum daily rate they pay)
How many times can you be called up for jury service?0 -
Well, I cn answer your last question pollyanna. Some employers continue to pay employees while they are on jury service. Alternatively you can use annual leave. In my case I was not paid as I am employed by a consultancy and if I did not work my time was not chargeable to clients.
I did my service and it was very interesting. I was paid a sum per day (it was 2003 so the sum may have gone up) which by no means equalled the salary I would have earned for that time if I had been working.
I was called when I was not on the electoral register as I was not naturalised at that time although I had applied for naturalisation after having lived as an ex-pat in the UK since 1977.“And all shall be well. And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceeding well.”
