scottish power automatically refunded credit!
Getting fed up with Scottish power now. Following a meter reading yesterday as i was in credit by £100 they have now refunded the full balance after this so my credit is now nil.
I was trying to build up the credit for the winter (as an electric only property and heating has only just gone on so bills are very low without, plus i have not been here all the time) the i have searched online it seemed to imply they only did this at annual review which if i recall they had a date of around February /March on their website (until they updated it a few weeks back and now cannot find a date).
Is there any way to stop them doing this in future, as i don't want to build up the credit for them to wipe it back to zero every so often!
Also has any one else had this, if so how long did it take for the money to hit the account again, a I am tempted to pay some of it back to them via debit card (as appears from website can make payment via card as well as the standard DD).

The same happened with my provider.
I called them about another matter and commented that I was happy to leave the credit, as winter bills would be higher, but they said automatic repayment of credit, over a certain sum, was policy.
This quarter , we are not unexpectedly £11 in arrears, so they propose to increase the monthly payment bay almost half. The calculation being based on the assumption that once a fix is ended, one will go onto standard tariff for the rest of the year. (Who on earth would do this if another penalty free fix is available ?)0 -
People complain when companies hold on to credit so government and Ofgem and the media force them to refund it.
People complain when companies refund credit automatically when it gets above a certain level.
What is a utility company to do to please both sides?0 -

I cant see why they can't just make it clear that if you want a refund of credit that it can be requested rather than sending it back automatically, or if not to give notice to say we will refund x amount on x date if you do not want it refunded please let us know.
At the very least to make it clear what they will do as on Scottish powers site only time I could find confirmation that they will send it back is at the annual review date, which i am not there yet, or just refund all credit balances in spring rather than at/just before winter when people will likely use more electricity.MFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Overpaid £2173.61 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £37,286.86 2025 MFW target £1700, payments to date at April 2025 - £1712.07..0 -

There is absolutely nothing stopping YOU crediting the amount back to your account.
As they only do this once a year, it is not a really a problem is it!0 -

That's the thing though,If it's only once a year that's fine, but given that the website suggests that they only do it at annual review and that's not for another couple of months would indicate that they can do it more frequently.
I have since called their customer services team who have also confirmed that for some reasons the systems can auto send the money back as and when, and could not guarantee if I credited the funds back with debit card that the system wouldn't again send money back in a month or so.MFW#105 - 2015 Overpaid £8095 / 2016 Overpaid £6983.24 / 2017 Overpaid £3583.12 / 2018 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2019 Overpaid £2583.12 / 2020 Overpaid £2583.12/ 2021 overpaid £1506.82 /2022 Overpaid £2975.28 / 2023 Overpaid £2677.30 / 2024 Overpaid £2173.61 Total OP since mortgage started in 2015 = £37,286.86 2025 MFW target £1700, payments to date at April 2025 - £1712.07..0 -

The last three suppliers that I have been with have all refunded any excess credit at my annual review.
What I find far more annoying, is that every time that I provide meter readings when requested, they always change my monthly DD amount. When I get the email informing me of this, I simply log in and change it back to what I calculate that it should be based on real life annual consumption figures, rather than what their billing algorithm calculates that it should be.
I find that most customer service operatives just make it up as they go along and blame 'the computer' a lot! At least SP allow you to make changes like this online. I am still looking for the perfect energy supplier!0 -
