Car accident, driver at fault drove off

Hello, this evening a guy drove into me. It was 100% his fault, but when I stopped to exchange insurance details, he sped off. In fact I could not even get his plate (only partially).
I don't particularly want an at-fault claim on my insurance. I assume I have little choice but just thought I would ask if anyone has any ideas, if ther's anything I could do.
I do have the first 4 letters on his plate, I know the car shape and colour (not sure what make/model) and I can assume the car owner lives in my area.
Is there any way of using this information to find out who hit me?

Report it to the police first of all and get an incident ref number.
Then decide if you wish to claim by notifying your insurer. Any injury sustained?0 -
Give the police that information and let them look into it.0

Also check for any CCTV in the area. Sometimes living in a panopticon has advantages.0
