Download my data

Options
I have both a gmail and a 'hotmail' account (think it is an outlook.com account now but I still call it hotmail). In my google account I can easily download all my account data including gmail. Is there any easy way of doing this in hotmail? I am realising that I have a lot of data in that account and I would like to make a backup. There don't appear to be any options from within the hotmail interface itself.

  • You don't say how you access the outlook/gmail mailboxes .... nor which device you use. I use thunderbird on my PC

By default will Thunderbird leave my email 'on the server'?

I'd like to know this too. I did this about a year ago with my hotmail (now outlook) account and it was a massive pain. I think the solution involved downloading the windows live package and using the hotmail client within that to back them up somehow, but it certainly wasn't as straightforward as it should be.

Now they've rebranded it to outlook as well it makes googling even more tricky as all the outlook responses are for the proper outlook application normally used in offices etc, not the webmail that you're using.

Sorry I can't be of more help but please let me know how you get on.
  • I used my copy of MS Outlook as an email client to operate my Hotmail account, both downloading to and sending from. I rarely use the web interface.
You can equally use other email clients like Thunderbird.

I set Outlook to leave the messages on the Hotmail server for 10 days before deleting them so that if I need web or smartphone access when not at home to my recent message they are still there.

Obviously I back up the MSoutlook .pst file where all the messages are stored. That is normally stored in a odd place hidden away so I have also changed that to somewhere more sensible.
No idea about thunderbird or other email clients...........

Thunderbird will do what you tell it to. :D

If you want it to leave mail on the server it will.

Or you can back up from webmail.

Log in then look under the File menu for Import/Export you want to export to a file then choose the Folders and or emails you want to backup and then choose the .pst file type.

Your Outlook.com mail will then save everything you chose to your computer.

I'm paraphrasing but someone who knows the exact sequence you need to follow will be along shortly if you need any more help.

I have mine set to leave it there, when I check the same email on my phone it gets downloaded and marked as read.
