Free boiler schemes

Hello,

I am sorry if this might seem like an obvious question to you. I am posting this on behalf of a family friend who is 92 years old. He lives in a 1 bedroom flat and needs a new boiler. I believe he is with British gas but i may be wrong.

He does not receive any benefits due to his beliefs and not wanting to burden the government. He has a standard pension, and a small secondary pension from an old job to live on each month. His total life savings locked away is around 2/3k and does not want to loose this.

My question is would he be entitled to any help or partial help. If he gets a new boiler he wont have any backup money for future unexpected bills.

Being 92 this is really worrying him as he has no boiler.

There are online forms that you can complete to check qualification , but some of the schemes aren't as good as they look, because only certain 'approved' fitters are used and the costs beyond the price of the boiler can be considerable, making the 'free' boiler more expensive than using a fitter not in a scheme.

Our first boiler was fitted in 1978, so we had to have new gas runs to meet more recent legislation, when we had a new one, last year.

Thanks for the reply. Are you aware of if you do not get pension credit you cannot get free help?
  • As far as i'm aware he would need to be on some kind of benefit to get free help.

As Teddysmum said there are forms online that can tell you your eligibility so may be worth trying to find one of those.
