Tax Credits - Not Married!!!!

Hi wondering if anyone can help.
Just had a letter from Tax Credits (Family Tax) stating that a name had been linked to my account and that I should have claimed as a couple not a single parent.
The name they linked was in fact my brother!!!
I live with my parents have never married or lived with anyone and have one daughter.
I rang them and they said a name had been linked to me as he had tried to claim housing benefit at this address, which is absolutely B***S**T as we haven't this person since 2005 and has lived abroad since then.
Rang them & told them this and gave his D.O.B etc and full detals as above but now they want proof i.e. Bank Statements, my divorce papers!!!! etc.
The question is now I have pointed all this out to them they still want my bank state statments. What right do they have as I haven't done anything wrong ever!! so what basis are they asking for these and can they?
Thanks

Might just be easiest to send them your bank statements, even if they have no grounds for wanting them. Maybe also send a photocopy of you and your brother's birth certificates. Stiffly-worded letter might also be in order.0

Ah, this sort of thing happens all the time. The data matching system picks it up. Your brother must be using that address for something.
Unfortunately you just need to sort it out and jump through the hoops. Clarify in writing this is your brother not your ex-husband. Send some proof0 -
Just remember they don't know you and if it they took everyone word at face value how many married couple would lie and say they live with their brother.
Unfortunately they are a lot of people who have no qualms about lying so they need to check every claim that could be one of them. Just give them your statement. They don't care what's on it just wasn't too make sure it shows you are paying for everything you would expect to as a single mum.0 -

Why are you mystified??? do you honestly think you have the right to claim something and not adhere to the rules, if you don't want to show them proof don't claim its that simple0 -

OP didn't say she didn't want to send proof, just asking if she still has to. I would be mystified too if HMRC thought my brother was my ex-husband and was asking for my divorce certificate!
OP: might be worth checking with your brother regarding this HB claim, sounds odd if he's living abroad- maybe a victim of identity theft?0 -
Sinply telling them that it is your brother wouldn't be enough. In all fairness, anyone could say anything in a phone call.
Sending bank statements will provide them with proof that you are supporting yourself as a single person i.e. No additional income, can pay all bills yourself etc.0 -
Let me guess... Concentrix strikes again?0
