How to stop intercom getting rained on

hello all

hoping someone can give some advice, I have a
ELRO VD53A Video Door Intercom

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ELRO-VD53A-Video-Door-Intercom/dp/B006XBT7UY

however whenever it rains and theres wind it gets into the out door unit and breaks. So I need some kind of flap or covering that will cover the whole intercom ie top, bottom, sides etc and when someone comes to the door they just lift up the flap, but to make sure its a flap that if they let it go then it comes back down so it cant by mistake be left up for rain to get on it again?

Does anyone know where I would get something like this or even something thats not meant for an intercom that I could use, or if not how I could make one or where I could get someone to make something.

Thanks all in advance

It's sold as being for outdoor use, if it can't withstand a bit of rain send it back as unfit for purpose and buy a better one.
  • Sounds like cheap tat to me. Did the box have an IP rating on it?

Agree with above, return as unfit for purpose. Get a refund.
  • Thanks, its over 1 year old so doubt I would get a refund.

I used it at my old house but the door frame was very sheltered from the elements but this door frame is not as sheltered.
The company have offered to send me a replacement outdoor unit. So thats going to be my cheapest option rather and make a shelter for it rather than buying a whole new one. Is there maybe some kind of bendable metal I could make a shelter for the outdoor unit or something?
Not sure if box at an IP rating on it.

You can get a refund under SOGA if it's not fit for purpose. Nothing to do with a 1 year manufacturer's warranty-your claim is against the retailer. The problem is proving that there is an inherent fault in the design, i.e. it's not sealed properly. It may have been badly fitted, in which case you have no case.

Sending a new one wont solve the problem I suspect. Its more like not fit for purpose. I got the manual no mention of IP rating pretty poor manual at that

  • This looks as though the socket can be removed to give space inside, and is clear:

This one has space inside (you could probably cut away the centre strut) but isn't clear
