isle of wight for a day

Hi, I would like to go to the isle of wight for a day trip, but it seems like a lot of money, £50 odd to take a car. Is there a cheaper way to get there with a car, or is it easy enough to get around if we went on foot? I'd like to do the touristy things, like the zoo, or anything else anyone can recomend. I live in Fareham, so its easy to get to either portsmouth or southampton.
Thanks
Mary

To see much of the Island you really need to take your own car. We have relatives there and have always found Red Funnel from Soton cheaper than the other ferries - even though it is the longest crossing !

If you are not tied to a particular day and are willing to go/return at slightly less "convenient" times you should be able to pick up a reasonable fare.
Another way to look at it - what would a one hour train journey cost you ? - without your car !
  • An alternative is to buy a "Hover Rover" from Southsea.
This gives you the Hovercraft return trip and then an all day rover ticket on the Southern Vectis buses. With the bus station right by the Hovercraft landing strip, it was easy.
    £17 per person.
