Online betting

Hi Guys

This is my first post so please go easy!!

I like to bet on football online (bet365 etc) purely for fun and probably deposit from £15 - £100 per month. Quite a lot of the time I make money and am quids in by the end of the month. It's purely for fun and certainly not a habit or addiction. Money is always deposited on a visa debit from my bank account and I,m never spending anywhere beyond my means.

Does anyone know if this can/will affect my credit rating??

Thanks in advance

Oliver

  • Yes it can! I recently submitted my credit report to a financial advisor due to looking into a mortgage. I used to dabble in matched betting and all the credit searches from the numerous betting sites showed up on my file. This could look bad to a lender and I was told they would then scrutinise my bank statements.

If you are only registered with one betting site, you would probably be ok but they will look into how much you spend each month.

Just don't join numberous betting sites!

Which betting sites credit check you?

My advice would be to have a separate account to that of your main account so there's no sanctimonious examination of all your expenditure should you apply for a mortgage.

Pay for betting by PayPal is maybe a good idea. Betting sites assaulting you with a credit check - I didn't know it happened.

Betting sites do NOT carry out credit checks as they are NOT EXTENDING CREDIT.
With regard to the original question, as you are using a debit card nothing in relation to these transactions will show on any credit report and therefore cannot impact your credit rating.
The only remaining point is whether or not you want your own bank (or anybody else that you may show your bank statements to for any reason) to know that you use gambling websites. Personally I think that I would not choose to use the debit card from my main bank account for this purpose. I have a friend who plays online bingo and has opened a basic bank account with debit card for this sole purpose.
  • I joined tombola a few months ago and the "identity check" they did is on my credit file, which highly annoyed me.

I don't they do a 'credit search' per se, but an identity check to prevent fraudulent activity etc.

For payment I use a prepaid Mastercard (range) so that there are never payments showing on bank or credit card statements for gambling.

(Even though I've only spent £20 on it in six months)

    .

Bet365 DO run credit checks. Plain and simple

All betting companies do run credit checks. Its part of the verification process. It mostly to ensure you are not betting from the united states where online betting is illegal.

I have a spread betting account, which in theory is a line of credit as spread betting allows betting on margin, but even this does not appear on my credit profile.

This will not impact your credit rating in any way.

The only time betting would be an issue would be if you are applying for a mortgage and have to provide 3 months banks statements and had a load of betting transactions on there.

FYI - Its a Verification check on your credit file, basically just to check you are who you say you are and your address is correct to stop money laundering etc. This DOES NOT affect your credit file in any way shape or form.

Obviously the only way i see using gambling sites could affect you is if you apply for a loan or mortgage where they would sometimes want to see your last 3 months bank statements and if you use these sites a lot it could raise alarm bells that you have a gambling problem. I think best if you are going to gamble use a separate account if you are thinking of applying for a loan or mortgage in the near future, if you not then it really makes no difference.

I used to play a lot of online poker, I used an online wallet - Neteller, which is accepted by most online sites, and meant I could move money from site to site without it going through my bank account.

In the largely uncontrolled world of credit checking, yes, they could wallop you with a credit check, with, or without, your express permission. However, I doubt very much that they carry out actual credit checks as opposed to one of the several other checks graciously facilitated by the CRAs to all and sundry.
