Any update on rogue diallers?

Any update on rogue diallers? I was conned last year before I had my new virus protection installed. I unknowingly cancelled a pop-up and downloaded a rogue dialler onto my computer. British Telecom refused to write off the amount of £56 I was duped out of after a bit of corresponing with them they deducted £25 but this was only because they were late in replying to one of my letters (I think they were trying to appease me). To cut a long story short the last I read was that some M.P was taking them to court over it as in his eyes B.T were aiding and abetting the criminal by gathering the illgotten money in for them. Has anyone got an update on that cos I still owe £30 in respect of this ..........

You can ask BT to bar premium rate numbers from being dialled from your exchange line. This is FREE of charge. However, some of these scams operate via international numbers, and these are not premium rated. BT will also allow you to bar international numbers from your exchange line, but unfortunately they will charge you £1.75 per month for having that facility.

BT have launched a piece of software which you can now download for free. This software monitors your pc for you and it will alert you to any changes being made to your dial-up connection. It will not prevent such connections from happening, because you may wish to allow it, but it will warn you if an attempt is being made to alter your dial-up settings. Here is a link to the part of BT's site where the free software can be obtained:

I too was the victim of a premium rate dialler scam, but with the help of people on this site, ntl have written it off. Apparently as a 'goodwill' gesture. Yes, i too argued that they were effectively aiding and abetting criminals, ie collecting money for them. I continued to pay my bills but not the charge for the premium rate dialler scam. I stuck it out, repeating my argument, for about one year. and the fact that the people behind the scam - it was a known scam - (at the time I was stung) known to ictstis who were investigating it. i also used the argument that it was not unreasonable for me to expect that where there is a known scam in operation that it would not be unreasonable to expect your phone provider to block it ( ha but then they'd lose the money!) which is possibly why they don't block them - and why should the man in the street be charged for blocking it anyhow!! During this time, each week I got a call fromtheir (NTL) collections department who seem to have little liaison with their other departments and I had to relay the situation each time, I got letters threatening Iwould be cut off. It would appear that they could not do this as I had not actually refused to pay the bill -just disputed the premium rate dialler scam. Anyway in a nutshell I hung on and took advice from this site and I don't have to pay it. So others take heed and hang on in there. A REALLY BIG THANKYOU TO ALL WHO ADVISED ME, ON THIS SITE, WITHOUT YOU I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN COURT.I TRULY APPRECIATE IT. I hope this helps others!

I rang BT yesterday evening to bar premium numbers, the girl said it would cost £1.75 a month. I said it was on their website and in the booklet that it was free. She checked and told me I was correct and barred them for me. (She was very apologetic for not knowing - just persist if you are told this as well.)
