Denied mobile phone contract

I have been declined a mobile phone contract by Three and wonder if I should be worried about my credit rating or if it may be temporary, the story is this:

I currently have a mobile contract with O2 for £12pcm and have never defaulted, my 2 year contract has ended and my phone is rubbish so thought I would look for a new deal including a free phone
I also have a phone contract sim only with Three for £11pcm for my daughters phone again never defaulted(1 month left on contract)
I also needed a sim only deal for my youngest daughter for the phone we have bought her for Xmas.
So I went into the phone shop and explained that I would like to take out a sim only deal with Three for £11pcm for youngest daughter and as they had a deal on a new phone for me with Three at £15pcm I would like to swap to this too.
This would mean all three contracts are with Three.
Hope your still with me: The sim only deal was processed first and went through no problem but when the put through the application for my new phone it was declined.
So is there a problem with my credit? Or is it because I have too many phone contracts at one time?
I was going to cancel my O2 contract via Three so that I could keep the same number but I don't know if I should cancel my O2 contract now in order to get a deal with 3 or if I do this I will be left without a phone at all because I can't get a third contract.
Any help appreciated
BTW: Homeowner, long term employer, no defaults

    I don't know. Is there?

What do your credit files say? Are you carrying a lot of debt, high limits, on the electoral roll, any financial associates, do you have established credit history, ever taken out payday loans, etc?
  • Haven't seen credit file, I have 1 small loan-no defaults I'm on electoral roll. I got the 1st new contract with no problems so just wondered if having multiple phone contracts could be a problem and was wondering if any body had heard of a limit on allowable phone contracts. I have no known credit problem, I have had loans/ credit in the past with no problem and no defaults- all paid off, except for a period about 20 years ago and I've had a mortgage/ credit since them so that shouldn't be it.

3 will be able to tell you if they have a max number of contracts. If they don't, you really need to check your files. You could have someone else's CCJ sitting there for all you know.

A solution is a Sim only plan and buy a phone outright.

Which is usually the cheaper deal overall and more flexibility as the phone would be unlocked.

I am wondering if perhaps the problem is that you took out the SIM only contract online and then immediately tried to take out a second contract which the system somehow flagged as potentially fraudulent or duplicate. From what you have said about your credit I can't really see that being the problem.
There is another possibility. A very long time ago in the early days of mobile phones I recall having some sort of problem as a result of trying to have too many phones on the same network.
You are an established existing customer of 3.The best thing would be to call them to try to discuss the problem and see what suggestion they can make to get you and your 2 children all together on 3.

Just re-read your post and realised this was in a shop and not online. I hope that when they refused the second contract you made it cleat that you no longer wanted to go ahead with the first and did not proceed with it. Did the shop not offer any explanation? After all £15 monthly payment is a quite small amount. Outright refusal is a bit odd. Did they not offer with a deposit or something?
  • I was knocked back by EE once and they said specifically it's because I had too many contracts with them already, I just went with another provider in the end
