Since 26 October 2015, new FCA rules require phone numbers for existing customers to call to begin 01, 02, 03 or 080. Most banks and insurance companies were previously using expensive 084 or 087 numbers but most have now changed to cheaper 03 numbers. In many cases the old 084 or 087 number has been swapped to the matching 034 or 037 number.

Most people will have old paperwork that invites them to call an 084 or 087 number to make a claim on their insurance. These calls are very expensive, especiwlly from mobiles. In the first instance try replacing 084 with 034 or replacing 087 with 037. If it works, calling the 03 number will be very much cheaper.

Very many other organisations have stopped using expensive 084 and 087 numbers. Before making any such call, check the official website of the organisation you're calling, for their latest numbers. In most cases, you'll find an 03 or 080 number.

Calls to 03 numbers cost the same as calling 01 and 02 numbers and count towards inclusive allowances on landlines and on mobiles. If you have an allowance of calls to 01 and 02 numbers this will always include calls to 03 numbers.

Calls to 080 numbers are free from landlines and from mobile phones.
