Grants for home improvements

We've recently bought a new home which is in serious need of improvement in terms of windows, central heating and insulation. We also need a chimney rebuilt.

Ive spoke to the energy saving trust who have told me of grants that are available but I must use their approved contractors which Im not keen on, particularly as there is no one local to me.

Are there other ways / schemes available?

Most grants require registered or approved contractors to carry out the work. Frequently these can be more expensive than either doing the work yourself or getting you local bloke to do it.

However if someone is giving you free money (which is what a grant is) then it's not unreasonable that they want to make sure that the work is being carried out to their standards.

It's up to you then to decide if the grant is actually worthwhile
