Sky+ remote control issues

Hi
I hope this is the right place, but I have a problem with my sky+ remote. What happens is when you press the sky button, the picture goes blank. However, if you hold your hand infront of the infra-red bit and press the button then it works.
This happens when going through the channels as well?!
Does anyone know what it the problem and how I can fix it please?
