The mystery of the disappearing avatar.

So, here's a question.
When I log in, I have the Forum display in the old green format.
I can see my avatar, which I recently changed to my Christmas version.
Yesterday, after I logged out, I had another quick look at a thread, which, because I'd logged out, was in the new blue and white version. My avatar wasn't there!
Yet when I'd done something similar a while back, it was there!
Anyone know what's happened?
I assume it's something to do with my having changed it recently, but why disappear?
