How do you convert music dowmloaded in mp4 format to mp3 and play using windows media player?

Try this. Free version allows 4 tracks at a time to be converted to do anymore just close and restart.

I use it in FLAC files.

You could try dbpoweramp music converter. The mp3 encoder is on a trial license but not too expensive I think if it does what you want.
