Sliced cheeses

I use these for convenience occasionally, but find generally that the slices are too thick, I buy various sorts. Does anyone know of a brand/supermarket where you can get sliced and pre-packed but thinly sliced, almost shaved?

Can buy this sort on the continent but cannot find them locally. Yes I know I can buy a block and slice myself, but in this instance want pre-sliced. Proper cheeses though, not the processed awfulness.

Thanks

we use a Norwegian cheese slicer.

Quick and can do thinner slices. I know you asked where to buy ready sliced but the slicer is very quick and easy.

I have one of those and it's been in the drawer for years as I found it useless. It only cut well if the cheese being sliced was narrower than it's opening.

How about grated cheese ? It goes further and scientists have said that it also tasted better, due to the surface area exposed.

Which means that you could use a great deal less. Occasionally it's on offer, which makes it ideal to buy in bulk and freeze. Defrosts perfectly well.

As for the cheese slicer, it's fine if you stick to hard cheese such as Parmesan. No good for a softer cheese such as Cheddar; as for Cheshire cheese or Wensleydale, forget it.

Well either I have some super chedder here or the ultimate slicer.
Has been slicing chedder without issue (yes wider than the slicer) for over a decade.

I have to agree with Custardy, I have a cheese slicer and get really wafer thin slices.

Thanks for the replies. I have one of those Norwegian slicers about somewhere, will hunt it out. Have tried in the past and just didn't get on with it. I wonder if there are better designed ones? There seems to be an adjustable thickness one for sale. Mine always seemed to drag the cheese and impossible to cut anything decent other than small blocks of hard cheese. Havarti for instance was impossible. Perhaps the blade is dull? I will pursue this as an option if I can't find another solution. The grated stuff is not an option either in this instance.

Thanks for all replies. Perhaps I should just resort to extra careful slicing with a sharp knife LOL No expense at all.

Try these they have a thin & tick wire (neither are that thick) been using mine for ages, bought at a garden centre but you can get them in loads of places. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005BSH9FU

the continental cheeses are often more rubbery (if we are talking about Edam etc), hence you can get a thinner slice.
A good extra mature / vintage cheddar is quite crumbly so you have to slicer thicker or it will be shavings by the time you get it to the shop.
  • If you buy cheese from the deli counter they can slice it very thin for you. In the USA everyone buys it from the deli extra thin. here much less common, but they will do it.
