Laptop power problems

I have a Toshiba C660-2EM which is a few years old.
The battery stopped holding its charge a couple of months ago so I've just been using it plugged into the mains.
However this last week, it's started powering down in the middle of me using it even when plugged into the mains. Visually I can't see a problem with the charger.
The last time it turned itself off I got a message about scanning the drives - no idea if this is related or not but I let the scan run and it rebooted as normal.

What do you think?

Firstly the battery is probably kaput and needs replacing.

Secondly if the laptop is just instantly going blank as though the power is immediately being removed then it's most likely to be the dc jack plug or socket (the one into the laptop) is beginning to fail.

Yes the laptop is instantly going blank. How cheap/easy is it to replace the dc jack plug or socket for a technological numpty?

If it's the DC socket on the Laptop, this gives you some idea:

Check its not overheating also. Daughters Toshiba started switching off, opened it up and got the vacuum into the cooling fins and all good since.

Careful with getting a vacuum cleaner in near the innards of a computer - the air moving over a plastic nozzle can build a static charge. A can of compressed air is safer.

I've got the older Toshiba satellite and the power Jack broke. Decided to have a go fitting the new jack, after watching a YouTube tutorial I found it fairly easy. The new jack cost under a fiver off eBay and stripping and rebuilding took me about 1 hour.
