Blu ray picture not smooth

Hi all, silly thing but...

My blu ray box set of the X Files arrived today - hurrah! Unfortunately what I've noticed is that whilst the picture clarity is fantastic, it's not smooth at all, whenever the camera moves. It's almost like there aren't enough frames to gain that smoothness; it's incredibly distracting.

I have a Panasonic blu ray player and Samsung smart TV (both very new), and wondering if I have a duff set, or whether there's a setting I can change, or whether anyone can help at all?! I've tried episodes from the earlier and later seasons and it's the same. I'm pretty sure it was filmed on 35mm, don't know if that made a difference when converting it?

TIA if you can help :)

Could be the settings on the TV, try turning off the picture enhancements. I had similar problems on mine. (samsung TV) can't remember which one of the enhancements caused it though.

Some other people on a Blu ray forum are trying to help, but it seems that a number of people have the same problem with this box set, although I will, of course, try them on another set first. :)
    Thanks

It's likely the the original was not filmed in HD or anything close and has been up-scaled, what you are seeing is a classic case of that.

The X Files was shot on 35mm film. The HD version has been created using the original camera negatives.

One thing comes to mind Framerate.

Sounds like it might be of the devices is set to 50Hz and the other is set to 60Hz

Can you check that both are set to 60Hz (take a look at the settings menus to see if you can change the Hz values between 50 and 60

My hunch is that you're seeing pan strobing from a progressive source, possibly related to Sol's post, albeit indirectly.

If it was shot on 35mm (progressive 24fps) but destined for TV (interlaced, small screen), they MAY have panned a bit fast in places which worked on 50i TV sets, but visibly breaks down on larger screens, especially if they had to mess with the telecine frame rates to get to 25 from 24p, possibly worse still if it's an American pressing via 30p.

Or it could just be a crappy encode, and you're seeing MPEG artefacting. Are there lots of episodes on each disc? Maybe it's been over compressed and this is the result - again much more visible on larger TV sets.

Couldn't say for sure without seeing it in situ, but the upshot is it's likely to be an encoding issue, and good luck convincing anyone as most punters will never notice or have the vocabulary to express it. You'd be staggered just how complex this stuff can be under the covers!
