E cheque payment received on 29th Nov still not cleared

I received an e cheque payment on 29th November with a message from paypal -
"Your buyer has sent the payment, but we suggest you wait until the eCheque has cleared before posting the item. We'll email you as soon as the money is in your PayPal account."
I still haven't got the all clear msg from paypal and payment is showing as a timer.
Do I just sit and wait? Do I get in touch with buyer? I haven't got in touch with buyer at all - I am assuming he knows that it was an e cheque.

It can take a while for an e cheque to clear. I usually drop the buyer a note to say I am waiting for the cheque to clear and will post as soon as it does.

It should clear in the next couple of days. 7-10 days from payment is the norm.

I sent a polite msg to the buyer as Charliesmum suggested and this morning I got a msg from buyer, in poor English - I have pay, pls send the item.
Why does the buyer think he has paid? Would he not have been told that there was a hold on whichever way he paid paypal?
What exactly is an e cheque??
  • I wouldn't assume the buyer knows.

The buyer thinks they've paid because technically they have, it just hasn't cleared so you don't have the money yet but if they haven't looked at their Paypal or don't understand what an e-cheque means then as far as they're concerned they've paid and you have the money. Ebay will show the item as having been paid for.

I don't think buyers are informed and I have heard of echeques being sent randomly with no explanation as to why, it's not something the buyer has chosen to do.

An e-cheque is an electronic cheque which is exactly as it sounds; a cheque that has been sent electronically. So it works the same as a normal cheque.

The buyer doesn't seem to understand, although it's odd that they haven't been wondering where their item is if they think they've paid. It should clear soon in which case you can then send the item. If the e-cheque payment fails then you don't send it.

    it.

My side, I have a TSB current account attached and an AMEX. I always choose to use AMEX but Paypal always wants to default to TSB. It seems totally random whether it will go by e-cheque or not. It doesn't appear to be related to item value. If I spot Paypal has sneakily defaulted to e-cheque then I usually change the payment method, but if it goes via my TSB current account, its 50-50 if it'll go as an instant payment or e-cheque.

In Ebay the timer is showing.

Sorry to sound so thick but the e cheque is coming from paypal right? Does it mean that there are not enough funds in his paypal account? If paypal decides this randomly, does it mean that one my payments could also be echeque - I always have a reasonable amount in my paypal account and before buying I always check that I have enough funds.

Possibly means the buyer doesn't have the funds. Could just be random. Like bxboards says, sometimes their payments are sent via e-cheque and they change it. No reason for it.

It's possible, but if it's coming direct out your Paypal account it's not likely. It's more likely to happen if paying with a card/bank account. You can check your Paypal account though to see.

I would message them back and say sorry but you dont have their payment.
Payment was by echeque and ebay/paypal are telling you not to send it until its cleared.

From what i've learnt with eCheques, is that if you send money via your bank on paypal, with no card as backup funding it will go as an eCheque... One of our customers did this... now she's added a card to her account and it's now all instant, since there's a back up source.
