Student Rent Strikes Due to lack of En-suite Facilities

Oliver Mawhinney, a second-year student who is involved in organising the campaign, said students had seen rents rise by more than £800 over the past three years. When the latest rise comes into effect, rents will be £1,500 higher than the maximum maintenance grant available outside London.

Often the accommodation is very old. Many of the rooms do not have en-suite or cooking facilities on the corridor."

Striking over rising rents is reasonable - thinking en suite facilities are essential just makes him look daft.

However, one of the reasons student rents have gone through the roof is because students have such unrealistic expectations of accommodation and won't accept what was considered nomal in the past. I checked my old HofR at Essex and they rent for £75 pw, which seems pretty reasonable to me.

My mum's care home fees were MUCH higher than that.... room 7'x10' and no en-suite.

    They don't know they're born.

    I've very rarely encountered an en-suite in any place I've lived/stayed either. They're a luxury. I've no en-suite here/now.

Then they leave Uni, expecting to live in penthouse apartments in central London.

In the 3rd year the halls I lived in all had a sink in the room. For a good number of gentlemen this was considered to be the equivalent of en suite facilities.

My sons tiny room with a bed smaller than a standard single was £125 per week and they had to share one oven between twenty people and one tiny fridge.

Due to the awful state of the bathrooms due to dirty people living on the same corridor he moved to a private student flat, en suite, four other rooms so an oven and fridge were shared by five, £105 per week.

No, they shouldn't expect en-suites. But some of the university owned accommodation is in terrible condition. If you read the article fully, you'd see some of their complaints are legitimate.

I knew someone who left a fork near the sink, so he could mash a number 2 down the plug hole.

It may mean that the toilet facilities are shared by all the bedsits and I wouldn't fancy that. It's ok if you share a bathroom with a few other people but I wouldn't want communal toilets and showers where you have lots of stalls in the same room.
Students are being screwed over with a life-time of debt. They should get habitable facilities and not some kind of eastern european backpacking lodge.

In my sons there were four showers and four toilets for 20 people. The showers opened directly onto the corridor so you either had to take your clothes into the cubicle in a fully water proof bag with your towel, or put your towel in a water proof bag and walk to your room in a towel.
