the best reply to the request for a short gap loan (but at the same time knowing it would be the start of continous battle of getting money back) from new neighbours was ....Oh..... I was just coming over to yours to ask if you could lend me a few few quid to next month!!!!0

It seems that the person who lends the money is the one losing sleep over if and when it will be repaid.....
Am definitely losing sleep now as any attempt I make to ask for it back is being pre-empted by a comment about why they don't have it yet. They still appear to be enjoying the finer things in life such as a weekend away and an upcoming holiday but there has been a personal issue that has also prevented me from asking for it back. No idea what to do now. I feel like a mug but I don't want to cause rows etc.0 -
It seems like your OH was right, you have been taken for a mug. Put it down to experience and forget it. Next time she (or indeed anyone else) asks you can say when anyone asks you for a loan, ........."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Please don't feel bad about being so kind. I too used to be like you, always willing to help out when possible and got stung badly a few times, but i found i could not refuse back then. I saw the light a good time later, and became more assertive, and i would never lend money to anyone now. It is different if one of my sons who live at home and works were to ask me for say £10 until pay day that is fine as i get it back. There are people out there who do take advantage of people like your kind self. Best wishes MargaretDo a little kindness every day.;)0

Thank you Margaret - that's really kind. I do feel upset both with myself and the borrower but it's been really nice to hear everyone's advice and very supportive comments. I hope I'll have more backbone in future and try and remember everything I've read here.0
