Photo Storage on phone and laptop

Options
I seem to be breeding photo apps!! Need some help streamlining please.

I have a Samsung galaxy s6, and photos get stored to the gallery. I also have Dropbox, Picassa, Carousel, Amazon Photos and another one which I think is Google Pictures. I'm not sure what is stored in the 'cloud' and what is taking up memory on my phone.

Ideally I would like is to be able to put photos into albums on my phone, then be able to view on laptop and tablet. Is one app better than others? Do I need all the ones I have?

Thanks for any advice.

'Google photos' is stored in the cloud & viewed on phone/laptop/tablet

It should be all you need and is free

'Google photos'... It should be all you need and is free.

Free cloud storage is up to 15GB which is shared between Photos, GMail and Drive. Additional storage starts at $1.99 a month.

It is a good app though and on the S6 it integrates really well with a Chromecast for large screen viewing.

Google Photos syncs and backs-up your phone's photos and videos so that a copy is left on your phone's storage and another copy is stored in the cloud (Google's servers).

There is a "Free up device storage" setting in the Photos app that will remove original photos and videos from your device that have already been backed up to the cloud.

This does free up space but is not selective, it's all photos and videos on your device when you invoke the selection.

FREE and No limit in Google photos, as long as photo resolution is under 16 megapixels

Over 16 megapixels count toward Google storage limits as mentioned above in POST 3

To avoid confusing anyone, both of the above are correct, depending on what back up setting is chosen in the app - either "High Quality (great visual quality at reduced file size)" or "Original (full resolution that counts against your quota)."

If using as part of a back-up strategy I would personally choose the latter "Original" option - particularly if used in conjunction with the "Free up device storage" option that will delete the originals off the phone.

There's a useful article on Google Photos here.
