I have just bought a new hard drive for my laptop after the old one failed. Rather than spend yonks putting my CDs onto the new hard drive, am I able to copy them directly from my iPod and save myself loads of time? If so, how can I do this?

Not free, but Anapod Copygear can do this for you. I use Anapod Explorer instead of the iTunes and am very happy with it - well worth the asking price.0

try putting it in disc mode

I don't think you can with iTunes. I'm sure there is other software that lets you do it though.0

Ok, another option.
Can I install itunes on my PC. Then add my new cds to this and when it updates my ipod, would it add these to the ones already on it without getting rid of the stuff thats already there?0 -
you would need to manually sync the songs on the pc yourself i think.
has the ipod been previously synced before on another itunes?
if so itunes will only really give you the option of erasing amnd syncing IIRC0 -
I used to use anapod explorer, but have recently moved over to yamipod - it's a single file that doesn't need installing - I have my ipod in disc mode, and have yamipod on the ipod, so with the ipod cable in my bag, no matter what PC I'm at, I can copy tracks to and from my ipod (I also use it with various apps from portableapps.com, so I can sit down at any PC that has a USB port and work in an emergency).
When my hard drive died and I had to re-install itunes (back in the day before I got hacked off with it), I wasn't watching the settings, and synced without thinking about it, which wiped all the stuff on the ipod.0 -

If you choose option to automatically sync, then it will put the new tracks on and wipe the existing stuff on the ipod.
HTHBe kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. :A0
