When you're in credit for gas/electric & request a refund does this appear like a normal transfer (e.g. FPI) or some special "DD REF" identifier?

It would appear with whatever reference your gas supplier chooses to use.
The refund amount should match the amount on the bill from your gas supplier that shows the refund.0 -
It would be FPI or Bank Giro Credit, they're not reversing a DD, they're paying you money.
As colsten says it'll have the supplier's reference on it, also their name.Eco Miser

A very recent refund from Sainsbury's Energy appears on my online banking as:
"BANK GIRO CREDIT REF BRITISH GAS TRADIN," followed by a reference number0
