Locking suitcase to luggage rail?

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about securing a suitcase when travelling by train. I can lock it shut of course but I'm travelling alone and don't want to have to lug it if I go to get a coffee - is there such a thing as a device to chain it to the luggage rack? I could just go to the local locksmith of course and buy a chain but this seems a bit clumsy...anyone any advice?

Alternatively, you could just ask the person in the next seat to watch your case while you went to the bar. I presume you're not carrying gold ingots?
  • I'm travelling in Italy and am assuming that I'll have to leave the luggage at the end of the carriage, possibly out of view, for a ten hour journey which is why I'm concerned about security. I take the point that the bag doesn't contain gold ingots but it does have everything I need for my holiday and losing it would be a problem. I was looking for advice on ways to secure it to the luggage rail so that passing thieves might be deterred. Anyone used anything?

You can buy padlocks with an extending wire inside them for locking backpacks, that would work as well.

But the more security you add to a bag, the more it will look like there is something in it worth stealing. If it looks like a good target, but it can't be removed I would imagine a determined thief would just cut the bag open.

I've used a lock with an extending cable to attach rucksacks, laptops suitcases to various bits of furniture/trains/buses/other luggage. Think I bought iot from Magellens. [Buy through quidco for 10% cashback]
The idea is to deter someone, they will move onto an easier target. If someone is really determined nothing will stop them. Presumably there will be other people around who may notice a bag being slashed open, but lets face it who would notice a bag being picked up & taken [well you might, but you'd just think it was theirs wouldn't you! ;) ]
