Places to keep a SORN vehicle
Can anyone suggest where I can keep a car that has been declared off road for road tax purposes?
It failed the MOT recently because of a complex electrical problem and the road tax then expired. I can't renew the tax until it passes the MOT and can't get the electrics fixed until after Christmas.
I currently have it on a friend's drive but need to move it soon.
Thanks!

It can go anywhere that's not maintainable at public expense and you have the landowners permission. However when you move it if it touches the road you'll need tax and insurance.0

Yeah, I've read that not maintainable at public expense is the criteria but I'm struggling to think of examples of where that could be.0

Garage, driveway, maybe the company you work for has a private car park.
Sometimes it's possible to rent a parking space on someones drive. Some farmers rent out land to park caravans on, and I expect they would take a car if they have room.
Also seen some self storage units have garages, but again you will have to pay for this.0 -

It can be anywhere that is not a Public Road.
which is:
'In England and Wales and Northern Ireland, means a road which is repairable at the public expense, and in Scotland, has the same meaning as in the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.'0 -
a supermarket car park isnt maintained at public expense but isnt this also against the rules as its available to the public??0

Nothing in the SORN regulations about available to the public, only that is not on a Public Road. But if it is considered to be a public place, it would need to be insured.0 -
I need to store it for a month and friend's garages and driveways tend to be occupied (esp over Christmas) so afraid that's not an option. I work from home so the company car park is out too.
There's a camp site a few miles out of town. Suppose I could try there.
I don't mind paying to store it but anywhere that's charging a day rate would probably work out expensive over a month. £50 seems reasonable though. I might have a look at local self storage.
Did think about Supermarket car parks but the ones round here all have time limits & fines for going over unfortunately.
The local leisure centre doesn't have any signs up but suppose that'll be council owned and therefore maintainable at the public expense. Plus it gets busy so I'd rather not take up space there.
Would be so much easier if I could just renew the tax!
Thanks for the suggestions everyone...keep 'em coming!0 -

If the car has a complex electrical problem that you intend to get fixed after Christmas, can I presume that's being done by a garage? If so, can't they keep it somewhere as they'll be getting the work in a few weeks? Or are they short of space too?0
