Urgent advice required please

i met this lady in the gym this am and this what she told me.

Her daughter is on hols in Spain with her 2 small children.

Daughter's hired car was new (only done 70 miles).

Clutch broke down.

They towed her and dropped off on toll road.

And told her she will have to pay 500 euros. Plus 145 for dropping her on toll road from somewhere on country side.

She is refusing to pay and rang her mum (the lady I met in gym) in the uk

This lady asked me what to do.

So as I am not sure what to say on behalf of this lady I would appreciate some feedback asap.

Many thanks in advance.

Who are 'they' that towed her?

    Depends what she signed.
It may be that the hire company sent out a breakdown company rather than their own people (and it's a mistake) -or it may be that she broke down in a "no stopping" area and it was someone else who towed her from a prohibited area.
Honestly you don't really have enough detail.
Calling the hire company head office would be sensible but they will likely only talk to the hirer- a lot of car hire outlets are franchises and don't always follow company policy unless prompted to by the head office.

I heard something on the radio about this the other day. It appears that it's pretty normal for car hire not to include any recovery. It might be worth checking on one of the motoring organisation's web sites (AA, RAC or whatever) to see what advice and information they have.
