removing and installing graphics card

Options
I have a laptop with a 256mb ati radeon graphics card in it. I want to buy a new laptop and take various parts out of my current laptop and put them into the new laptop, including the graphics card. How easy would it be to do this? The laptop I have at the moment is a zoostorm and I was thinking of buying a dell or a HP, would this make a difference? i also want to sell the remaining parts, eg, the dual core processor/motherboard, internal hard drive etc, how easy is it to remove and sell these things. The reason I'm doing all this is because i broke my laptop screen when i stepped on it! I dont want to have to fork out for another graphics card if I can use my current one in another laptop. I've been using an old monitor instead of the screen, but it isn't the same, and the dvd drive is !!!!!!ed as well. Speant £600 on it last year. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think that what you have in your laptop will be an ATI Radeon graphics chip, not a card. This will be soldered on to the board and is not normally an item which can be swapped.

As far as I am aware the only laptops with a separate card are the very recent high-end ones with a mini-pci type graphics adapter.

Some high end laptops from the last few years had separate graphics cards (the Nvidia2Go cards for example), but that doesn't mean you can swap them around like you can in PCs.

My advice would be to look on eBay for near identical models to the one you have... there's usually a few around that are being sold for spares and it would be much cheaper than buying a new laptop. Transplanting a screen and DVD drive is much easier than a graphics card.

Alternatively you could sell the whole lot on eBay in the manner I've described above. If you're selling the HDD as well, remember to sanitise it before selling... try here http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/default.php or http://dban.sourceforge.net/ for free security cleaners

  • Right o. Thanks. I've just bought a new laptop to save all the hassle. Just gonna sell the bits on fleabay. I have 2gb ddr2 667mhz ram/80gb hard drive/intel dual core/256mb ati radeon etc etc etc would it be better to take the bits out and sell, or just sell the whole lot as one?
