what would be the best device to buy to transfer vhs tapes to dvd

  • I have a Panasonic DMR-EZ48V DVD recorder that also plays VHS tapes, will record from VHS to DVD (in real time, so it's a slow process!) and IIRC upscales the VHS in the process. It also has Freeview built in, and if you connect it to your TV via HDMI it upscales the Freeview to near HD quality!
  • Buy one on ebay?

    EG:
Bush DVRHS02 - DVD Recorder & Video Cassette Recorder VCR - VHS to DVD

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bush-DVRHS02-DVD-Recorder-Video-Cassette-Recorder-VCR-VHS-to-DVD-/281873485899

Bidding up to £29.99 at the moment.
  • P.S. Be careful not to buy a dvd Player with built in video recorder.

Depends on your budget and how often you want to do this - a cheapo VHS player / recorder is virtually a give-away these days, and an analogue DVD recorder (i.e. one without a Freeview tuner) is worth very little, link the two with a SCART cable and you're done. If you already have a DVD recorder (or a HDD recorder that will accept SCART inputs) then that would do as well.

If you want to do it on an ongoing basis, you may prefer the neatness of having an all-in-one unit as mentioned above. I have my old VHS player connected to a DVD recorder for just this reason, however it's such a time-consuming job I've done very few.

What devices do you have already? VHS machine that you recorded the tapes on? DVD recorder? Anything?

The best machine, in my view is the Pansonic three-in-one - HDD, VHS and DVD all in one box.

Set it off overnight to commit a tape to the HDD, it stops automatically at tape end, edit the footage on the HDD, and transfer to DVD at high speed. EX83 is the model number, as I recall.....
