The 1.9tdi was a super engine - had one in a fabia for many years.

But it was phased out around 2009 and I think the op is looking for a newer car.

I have a 1.8tsi Octavia now and it has been good. I would be reluctant to go down to a 1.2 in a heavy car but there are plenty of 1.4tsis around and 122bhp should be enough.

Not a bad choice, it comes with good equipment and I think it does feel good to drive it to be honest.

Although I've heard that the car has a common fault that rain water being trapped at the bottom of either side of the front door. But it is a great car to drive and i'd still recommended it despite the issue. :)

    It's a VW/Audi, so it's well engineered. The problem is it's a dirty smelly polluting car :p

    It's a TSI, not a TDI...

    2005 Mk2 1.9pd tdi I've owned it for 9.5 years, 104,000 miles.

Has proved reliable, economic, and still drives as well as ever.

Attempting to persuade myself it's now time to change it, but haven't succeeded yet!

  • Get good write ups but the VW emissions cover up has fretted their sales. You never know what bargain you might pick up new or very nearly new. December is a good month to buy too.

  • Almost everyone seems to have something good to say about these cars. The Fabio 1.4 seems to be as large as a 1.8 hatchback, but very good mpg, and low co2 emissions, and not that bad looking.

And they don't all have a dpf filter, so would be suitable for a short trip to the supermarket.
