    It turns out that mobile phone, laptops or anything that stores personal data can not be handed back to a finder for legal reasons and must be destroyed if not claimed.


    Funny how all the police auctions I go to are stuffed full of all of the above.
  • Simple solution is if you find something and there is absolutely no way to identify the owner from it, just hand a note into the store describing what you have found and leave your contact details. If the loser gets in touch with the store, they can pass your details onto them.

    If it was me, id also contact the police and advise them of what ive found and where, along with my contact details they could pass onto the loser if they get in touch.

    You can then say you've taken all reasonable steps to trace the owner and if no-one claims after 28 days, then you can take ownership of the item.

    With a staff attitude like that, I doubt any lost items get returned to their owners. :(
